Creaney

The origins of the Creaney name are unclear, some believe that it comes from MacCrain which is a part of the MacDonand clan from Scotland and that ancestors migrated to Ireland in the 1600s using various spellings such as Cranney / Craney/ Creaney / Cranny / Cranie / MacCrain / McCrain / MacCrane. The other theory is that the name is Irish arising from the Gaelic name Ó Croidheáin. Either could be correct, though I suspect that our own ancestors came from Scotland.

The early spelling of the family name was CRANEY which the majority of our branches changed to CREANEY around 1910, though individual related families have retained the old spelling to the present time.

The family lived in the area around Armagh city, in the parishes of Kildarton, Grange and thereabouts since the early 1800s. Prior to that is unknown. There were Creaney / Craney families in nearby Lurgan & Portadown, also in Aghalee, Ballinderry & Glenavy in Co Antrim but there is no evidence that we originated from these places.

Research has now taken me back to John Craney & his wife Mary McConnell born in the early decades of the 19^th century. I am unable to prove any further back but there are two possibilities, (1) a baptism at the Grange 8 Feb 1815 of John son of Willam & Jane W Craney of Turcarry. And (2) baptism at Kilmore 19 Jul 1818 of Mary daughter of David & Mary McConnell of Richhill. However my theory has been thrown into doubt having obtained Mary’s death certificate in 1899 she is shown as having died aged 97 years, this would mean she was born in 1802. It would also mean she started having her children in her late 30s and would have been over 50 when the last one was born. It is more than likely that the death certificate showed the wrong age, 1818 would be a better fit but for now it remains a mystery.

John & Mary had 8 known children all but the first were baptised at Kildarton Parish Church between 1842 & 1854. The first was a son, John born about 1840 which was before Kildarton Church came into existence & as yet I can’t find his baptism anywhere else. Likewise I have not yet found a record of John & Mary’s marriage.

Their residence shown on the baptism records varies between the townlands of Turcarry & Mullinasilla. John Craney’s occupation is given as labourer & later as servant at Castledillon. Then in 1887 his son Abraham’s marriage certificate shows John’s occupation as a Coachman. This is very interesting as John’s grandson William also worked for many years as a Coachman at Castledillon.

The family home in 1864 as described in the Griffith’s Valuation was a “house and garden”, a look at some old maps shows this as a cottage one of 4 or 5 adjoining. They were tenants of farmer William Running who I believe was a major tenant of the Molyneux estate. I wonder did the Craneys move to that area specifically to work for the Molyneux family at Castledillon.

William born 28 August 1846, the fifth child of John & Mary, is my great grandfather. He had 4 sons that I am aware of, William (1876), Alfred (1884), John (1888) & James (1891). Sons William & John are documented as born in Belfast & it is highly likely that the others were also. However, as yet no birth record can be found for any of the sons. Alfred is my grandfather.

According to family lore William married more than once, the likelihood is the first 2 sons were to one wife & the last 2 to another. No record of any marriages have yet been found. He has been found in Belfast Street Directories from 1890 to 1897, his occupation is first given as Seaman & later as Ship’s Cook. On the Marriage Certificates of his sons his occupation is given as (William 1899) Ship’s steward, (Alfred 1906) Cook, (John 1910), Labourer & (James 1916) Labourer, and on his own death certificate (1910) his occupation is given as Butler.

William & his family returned to Co Armagh in the late 1890s. He died in 1910 & is buried in the family grave at the Grange.

As can be seen I have traced the descendents of a number of the family branches, and would welcome contact from other possible descendents.
