The MOFFETT name in its many spellings is Scottish, originates from the town of Moffat in Annandale, Dumfriesshire The first recorded use of the name is a Nicholas de Mufet, who was a witness to a charter by the Bishop of Glasgow around 1230. He was himself elected Bishop of Glasgow in 1268, but died in 1270 before being consecrated

Derryloran Parish Church Cookstown

It is possible that our Moffett ancestors arrived from Scotland in the early 1600s during the Plantation of Ulster, or later in the 18th century as proposed by R Maxwell Moffatt in his 1908 publication The Moffatts of that Ilk. A section of the book can be viewed from this link.

I have gained a lot of information from a distant Moffett relative and through the Parish Records at Derryloran Church at Cookstown. I have a lineage going back to about 1775. The picture above shows the church in Cookstown where many of our ancestors attended.

In researching the Moffetts through the church records I have gathered details of numerous baptism, marriage & burial records (additional to those listed here) going back to the late 1700s in the Cookstown area. Up to now I haven’t managed to make any definite links outside of the direct line, but they fit into a number of family groups over several generations. I am sure that they all connect given the time to investigate, unfortunately the available parish records only go back to 1797 so it will be difficult to take it any further.

The earliest known Moffett ancestor is Robert Moffett born about 1775 in the Cookstown area, he had a son also Robert born 1805 whose son Samuel, born 1845 married Sarah Simpson born 1849 (daughter of Edward Simpson). They married in 1865.

Samuel was a carpenter who had 12 Children between 1866 & 1892. Some time between 1892 & 1901 they moved to Larne. I can’t be any more precise about the date of the move, however the youngest daughter Charlotte was born in Cookstown June 1892 and the family were in Larne when the 1901 census was taken.
