Daughter of Robert Hind & Phillis Shield

Born 1811, Nenthead

Died 26 Dec 1896, Nenthead

Tamar Hind was my Great Great Grand Aunt, through the various records available to me I have managed to identify her at a number of points during what must have been an extremely hard life. She was born in 1811, daughter of a lead miner in the bleak Cumberland mountains.

  • She was baptised on 11 October 1811 at Alston Parish Church.
  • The next place I found her was in the 1841 census, she is 29 years and living with the family of the District Mine Agent, Tinniswood Millican, his wife Lucy & their 4 children. She is a domestic servant.
  • In 1851, she is 39, unmarried and shown on the census twice, once living with her mother Phillis. Phillis was 68 and described as "Pauper / Lead Miner's widow". Tamar had no occupation listed. On the second entry she is shown at the house of John Milliken, retired mining agent (he  was the father of her employer  in 1841 Tinniswood Milliken), here she is described as  a Washerwoman.
  • In the 1861 census she and her mother are found living with her brother Joseph (now a widower) & his family. She is described as a House Servant.
  • In the 1871 census. She is now 59 and still unmarried and living with her mother now 88. Her occupation is shown as Housekeeper, her mother is "Former domestic servant".
  • In 1881 she is now 69 and alone, her mother had died in 1873 aged 90. Tamar's occupation is shown as Outdoor Cleaner / Charwoman.
  • In 1891 she is 79 and has no occupation, it says she is receiving Parish Relief. It also says she is blind in one eye which was not mentioned before.
  • I finally traced her death on 26th December 1896 aged 85. Her cause of death is shown as “Morbus Cordis”, informant to her Death Certificate is Matthew Beck, her nephew, the son of her sister Jane. He was present at her death.
  • She is buried in the Churchyard of St John's Church, Nenthead, in an unmarked grave.
